A unique private-public partnership delivers benefits for the community while protecting the environment

The highlight of 2021 for Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network was acquisition of a state-of-the-art Agri-Processing Hub which allows the organisation to add value to agricultural produce while creating further income-generating opportunities for beneficiaries from vulnerable communities. The project also aligned perfectly with the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Green Jobs & Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) who supported the project in a productive ‘people-public-private partnership’. Mr. Ronald Mukanya, Director: Sustainability Management in the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, took time to explain the benefits that result for all stakeholders.

The annual Women in Environment conferences convened by the National Department of Environmental Affairs have brought together women who play a role in the environmental sector and green economy to network, exchange knowledge and learning and opportunities – and to showcase to national government what is taking place at provincial and local level with grassroots stakeholders.

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network is one of the women-led organisations who has participated in these dialogues and so came to the attention of the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning. Mhani Gingi promotes sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities in the Western Cape through urban agriculture and social entrepreneurial activities, which promote food security and income-generation.

Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub project
During 2020-2021, an opportunity arose to recycle and refurbish a pre-used shipping container to create the Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub. Activities that can be undertaken in the hub add value to the produce from the 10 community gardens and other ground food gardens managed by Mhani Gingi in the greater Cape Town area, so extending the product range on offer to clients. Mhani Gingi’s beneficiaries will also benefit from training in new skills such as packaging, cutting, processing, baking, bottling and drying of foodstuffs, which can be conducted in the hub. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has already provided training to Mhani Gingi staff in these skills and has pledged further support.

Ronald Mukanya, Director: Sustainability Management in the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, explained the benefits of supporting and partnering with Mhani Gingi in the initiative. “First and foremost, what for me was the biggest achievement was that we were able to respond to the demand and to work as a team on the project which benefits the community, in a way that is not service delivery supply led, but instead service delivery demand led,” Mukanya said.

Technical innovation
“The opportunity also takes forward the mandate of innovation (with) some of solutions the directorate would like to see and have been talking about,” he said.

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning provided technical advice on the project, in which AfriCube Box Solutions at Hope Africa Collective, in Philippi, undertook the refurbishment of the steel container with state-of-the art technologies and solutions.  The design and fittings in stainless-steel are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and sustainable.  Moreover, the facility provides access for wheelchairs and enables persons with disabilities to work in the hub.

Empowering women in the sector
Mhani Gingi’s work is especially aimed at empowering women, including survivors of gender-based violence at shelters. Through community gardening initiatives, Mhani Gingi aims to equip these women with skills that will enable them to gain financial independence and rebuild sustainable lives once they leave the shelters. “For us that is also a big achievement – taking forward women empowerment in the environmental sector,’’ Mukanya said.

Income-generation and jobs for communities
Equally important is stimulating income-generation and job opportunities in the community through implementation of the project. This objective of the project speaks to the huge challenge government faces of service delivery to the people and is a direct response to the demand from local communities for jobs. “So, we are also stimulating what we call the green economy and local employment.

“From my point of view this is a win-win situation, with economic activity coming out of the project and, by virtue of the livelihoods that are secured for women, (also fulfilling) a social part to the project.”

A journey of co-creation
The partnership with Mhani Gingi illustrates the community-centred approach underlying the Directorate of Sustainability Management’s work undertakings, to ensure that that they get it right and that initiatives remain relevant and answer to the demand from the people. “This is why we start with the person/people, to make sure we are responding to their demands,” Mukanya said. The directorate calls it the 4Ps approach: People-private-public partnerships. “I think we have been fortunate to be able to undertake (such) a journey of co-creation with Mhani Gingi, as a practical example of what partnerships can achieve.” The result is that all parties have benefited from the outcomes.

Environmental sustainability
Anything that takes forward the agenda of protecting our natural environment for future generations is a significant achievement and will squarely align with the mandate of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Mukanya said. Mhani Gingi’s Flagship Programme, incorporating the Mhani Gingi Organic Herb and Vegetable Seedling Nursery, promotes environmental sustainability. All agricultural activities undertaken implement organic food production, with beneficiaries receiving training in organic cultivation methods.

There is also alignment with the objective at the core of what the Directorate: Sustainability Management is working towards: Sustainability. Generally, sustainability is pursued through three spheres – environmental, economic and social. “Looking at these three areas and the outcome of work done, I think we are kind of pretty much achieving it all,” Mukanya said. Moreover, the delivery of income-generation and job-creation through a project while addressing environmental challenges, delivers a good message that alerts people to the benefits of looking after our natural environment, he added.

State-of-the-art Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub will further empower women farmers and vulnerable groups with opportunities in urban agriculture

The state-of-the-art Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub launched during Women’s Month will further empower women farmers and other vulnerable groups with entrepreneurial skills and opportunities in urban agriculture .

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network was honoured when its new state-of-the-art Agri-Processing Hub was handed over by Mr. Ronald Mukanya, Director: Sustainability Management in the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape and officially opened during Women’s Month 2021 by Ms. Bongiswa Matoti, Director: Agricultural Economic Services, Western Cape Department of Agriculture.  The launch event on 31 August, which was also a celebration of the achievements of women in agriculture to mark Women’s Month, was attended by dignitaries from both the public and private sector as well as by grassroots NGO representatives.

Reverend Douglas Bower of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Meadowridge, Western Cape, opened the launch event with scripture reading and a blessing of the Hub and all Mhani Gingi’s work. “Life begins and ends in the garden,” Rev. Bower said. “The food producing initiatives to alleviate poverty and hunger amongst the vulnerable and marginalised in the Cape Flats communities undertaken by Mhani Gingi, are crucial in improving and sustaining their livelihoods,” Rev. Bower added.

Dr. Earl Starr, a Mhani Gingi Trustee, welcomed the guests and reminded them to adhere to Covid-19 protocols at all times. “Welcome! Here you are at the Mhani Gingi Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence, showcasing innovative urban agricultural ways of producing food in a very small urban confined space,” Starr said. Guests were later taken on a tour of Mhani Gingi’s operations and the new facilities to see for themselves.

The Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub is created out of a recycled steel shipping container. The National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), through the EPWP being implemented by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Western Cape (DEA&DP), funded the acquisition of the 3m x 12m second-hand steel container and its refurbishment. It was refurbished and re-fitted in stainless steel by Hope Africa Collective of Phillipi, Cape Town.   The Agri-Processing unit is uniquely designed to allow wheel-chair access so that persons with physical disabilities can work in the space.

“We are extremely thankful to the department and the officials who facilitated the whole process,” said Ms. Lillian Masebenza, Founding Director of Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network.   Masebenza also expressed her gratitude for the additional support from the Department of Agriculture which will enable Mhani Gingi to extend agri-processing skills to the network of the women farmers and social entrepreneurs whom the non-profit organisation assists to make sustainable livelihoods.

A successful People-Public-Private-Partnership

Mukanya, in handing over the state-of-the-art Agri-Processing Hub, described the public-private partnership with Mhani Gingi in the refurbishment of the container for the Agri-Processing Hub as a perfect fit with his department’s objectives.  Mukanya admired how much Mhani Gingi, through its programmes, is achieving with very limited financial resources, operating in a very confined space, and effectively responding to the demand at a time when there was a lot  COVID-related hunger in communities. 

Mukanya added that the recycling of the container as well as the organic composting that was evident at the Mhani Gingi Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence in Athlone fitted well with the protection of the natural environment.   

He said that even more needed to be done to support women in the challenges that they faced in this country.

Taking agri-processing to the people

Matoti said in her address that 45% of agricultural produce from South Africa was exported.  Meanwhile, hunger and poverty exist in the country. A lot could be achieved through urban gardening and she hoped for the increased participation of women in gardening to feed their communities and in entrepreneurship. 

The Department of Agriculture is planning to take agri-processing activities “to the people” in communities all over the Western Cape, through mobile units, to promote small businesses and “to show them how to get to the next level,’’ Matoti said.

“We are hoping from this that every woman that Mhani Gingi can identify will be trained,” she said. “We want to see people start their own enterprises.‘’ She looked forward to the continued partnering with Mhani Gingi and the development of the Mhani Gingi Agri-processing Hub into a fully-fledged unit undertaking the juicing, baking, drying, packaging and other processing activities it is designed for. 

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has already delivered training to Mhani Gingi staff in the packaging and processing of foodstuffs and in hygiene and food safety practices. “Thanks for your words of encouragement, it motivates us as we continue with our innovative and inclusive work amongst the vulnerable and marginalised groups in our communities,” Masebenza said.

Unique, innovative and inclusive

The Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub is unique in two ways.  “It is innovative in that it is an adapted recycled container, and it is also inclusive as it makes provision for accommodating people in wheelchairs,’’ Masebenza said in a media statement.  The unit is fitted with a ramp to allow wheelchair access and with work surfaces accessible to people in wheelchairs.

“Hope Africa Collective has given the container new life. Everything inside is stainless steel. It is equipped with compliant fire protection devices. It is environmentally friendly, and it is attractive to the eye.  The design includes an energy-efficient cold store, hot water on-demand unit and simple yet effective water recycling capability. As a repurposed transporter of goods, our Hub is also portable as we can take our activities with us anywhere,” she said.

Adding value

“The value of the Agri-Processing Hub is that we will be providing a better service to our customers, the restaurant chefs, who will save time chopping and preparing vegetables by receiving better quality, pre-cut, shredded, and packaged produce from Mhani Gingi’s gardens. This will also benefit our other targeted retail customers and those who buy our produce at markets. Moreover, it will assist the soup kitchens of the Mhani Gingi Satellite Community Food Station, where we prepare meals for the hungry every week. We are thankful to Ladles of Love, for providing food twice weekly for our soup kitchens,’’ Masebenza said.   

“Another benefit is that we will be providing further employment and skills to the women and persons with physical disabilities whom we support. They will be able to make additional income from processing and packaging the harvests from their community and domestic gardens,” she said.

“The Hub also allows us to provide jams, juices, chutneys, preserves and dried herbs from our vegetables and herbs.  They can be packaged to give them added value and extended shelf life in dried and powdered forms.”  She added:  “Mhani Gingi is excited to add more value to our activities in urban agriculture and providing food for the hungry, especially after COVID increased the demand.”

Collaboration with social enterprises

Mr. Ravi Naidu, owner of Simply Asia in Heritage Square, Cape Town CBD, which sponsored catering for the launch event, said that social enterprises were very much in demand.  In order to be meaningful, collaborations with social enterprises needed to provide good quality products, sufficient quantities, and constant and continuous supply, he said. Naidu was accompanied at the event by Ms. Khuthala Xametshata, head chef at Simply Asia, Heritage Square.  She joined the business ten years ago without chef’s training and had succeeded in that short time to the demanding position of top chef, Naidu said.

He added that South Africa needed change and that women had the potential to fix the many challenges facing the country.  ‘’The power will be in women to make the difference,’’ he said.

Mhani Gingi

Mhani Gingi manages ten community food gardens in greater Cape Town area.  These provide the beneficiary communities with an income and food security.  Produce harvested from these activities and Mhani Gingi’s gardens at the Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence in Athlone also supply soup kitchens which are linked to the gardens, while excess produce is sold at markets and directly to restaurants.  

“We wish there could be more urban agricultural activities in our communities,” said Masebenza.

 

STATE-OF-THE ART AGRI-PROCESSING HUB WILL EXTEND MHANI GINGI’S ACTIVITIES IN URBAN AGRICULTURE

A full-equipped, state-of-the-art agri-processing container was delivered to Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network in June 2021 and training of staff has begun that will significantly extend the organisation’s operations helping vulnerable communities in the Western Cape metropole to generate food and income from urban farming and vegetable crops.

The National Department of Environmental Affairs, through the Extended Public Works Programme, sponsored the purchase and refurbishment of the 3m x 12m, second-hand steel container.  A team of “constructors” from AfroCube Box Solutions at Hope Africa Collective completed refurbishment and installation of the fittings, including the design to ensure that the Mhani Gingi Agri-Processing Hub is wheel-chair friendly.  The interior of the recycled container is now  lined with stainless steel for better cleaning and hygiene, and fitted with limited space to accommodate wheelchairs, a gas stove, oven, and cold storage.

ACCESS FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS

The facility handed over on 19 June 2021 also has two air conditioners; two deep sinks for cleaning vegetables; cupboards; working tables, which accommodate people on wheelchairs; a ramp to allow wheelchair access with ease; a stove with electric oven and gas top cooking facility; a modern geyser; fire escape window; and inner security door over and above the ordinary container doors.

The tables, stoves, a drying unit, and surfaces for cutting, paring, processing, bottling, baking, and cooking will allow Mhani Gingi to add value to the organic produce grown at the Mhani Gingi Organic Herb and Vegetable Seedling Nursery and 10 community gardens supervised by the nursery in Cape Town.  Access for wheelchair users aligns with Mhani Gingi’s focus on including persons with physical disabilities in urban agriculture.

Further training of Mhani Gingi staff in safety and food security has been delivered by Gareth Williams of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture.  This follows training already provided by the Department of Agriculture two years ago on the preparation of juices, breads, chutneys, jams, drying of herbs and processing of other foodstuffs.

The state -of-the-art interior of the Agri-Processing Hub is lined with stainless steel for better cleaning and hygiene and is designed to accommodate wheelchair users.

PROCESSING OF PLANT-BASED FOODS

“We will be able to prepare and process plant-based foods now,” said Lillian Masebenza, Founding Director of Mhani Gingi.  Further professional training in chopping and dicing vegetables and herbs, as well as packaging, is being sought so that Mhani Gingi can supply organic produce especially for top clients such as restaurants.  “We have not done the full-scale processing in the past.”

Mhani Gingi has consolidated the community gardens, which provide food for consumption as well as income for beneficiaries, in Langa, Retreat, Athlone, and Uitsig in Cape Town.  Extensive ground vegetable gardens at the Mhani Gingi Nursery site in Athlone yield seasonal vegetables such as spinach, turnips, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

Mhani Gingi sells excess produce at markets and to restaurants in Cape Town.  The supply of organic produce directly to restaurants, which was initiated through a partnership with Umthunzi Farming Community, will be further pursued with the added capacity provided by the new agri-processing unit.

JOB CREATION AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION

The launch of the Agri-Processing Hub is to take place on 31 August 2021 at the Mhani Gingi Centre of Excellence situated at the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children.

“We would like to demonstrate during the launch how it is possible to grow our own vegetables and herbs and add value by processing them,” said Masebenza.  “There are a lot of benefits from urban agriculture:  Job creation, poverty alleviation, and sustainable livelihoods for the women and people with physical disabilities we work with,” she said.

The Agri-Processing Hub launch during Women’s Month in South Africa will also be an opportunity to celebrate the formidable achievements of women in overcoming obstacles in the agricultural sector.

Shredded, cut and packaged vegetables will save time for the restaurant chefs, retail customers at markets, and soup kitchen cooks supplied by Mhani Gingi.

FOOD SECURITY

The Agri-Processing Hub will also further support the Mhani Gingi Satellite Community Food Station which prepares soup for community food kitchens situated among Mhani Gingi beneficiary communities in the Cape metropole.

Mhani Gingi wins WoW! Western Cape on Wellness awards as champion responder during COVID-19  

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network received Gold Level recognition at the 5th Annual WoW! Awards Ceremony of the Western Cape Government held as well as a special WoW! Wellness COVID-19 Responder Award for helping hungry communities in Cape Town during the viral pandemic lockdown in the past year.

Mhani Gingi’s wellness champions, Founding Director Lillian Masebenza and Nursery Administrator Vuyiseka Tekwane, accepted the awards at the ceremony which was streamed live on Facebook and Youtube on 27 March 2021 because of the COVID-19 restrictions.  WesternCape on Wellness is the healthy lifestyle initiative of the Western Cape Government.

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Mhani Gingi operated soup kitchens for stricken communities in Uitsig, Manenberg/Athlone, Langa and Retreat areas of greater Cape Town.  These efforts  were supplied from the 10 community food gardens managed by Mhani Gingi in the Cape Town area and boosted by donations of food from the Ladles of Love organisation.  The Mhani Gingi Satellite Community Food Station, which opened in August 2020 to co-ordinate efforts, distributed thousands of meals to hungry residents weekly over the year through Mhani Gingi’s beneficiaries in the communities.  These Mhani Gingi soup kitchens are continuing to dispense meals during the present year.

The number of soup kitchens in operation and quantity of adults and children being supported with meals steadily increased over 2020, with five new community gardens being established at the year-end. This took place as vulnerable communities felt the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 lockdown.  Every beneficiary who is directly assisted by Mhani Gingi impacts another five people in their community, which ensures benefit for the whole community.

Physical and mental wellness

Dr Frederick Marais, Deputy Director: Increasing Wellness at the Western Cape Department of Health, introduced the WoW! Awards Ceremony participants.  Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Minister of Health in the Western Cape Province, thanked the wellness champions for their efforts in 2020 and emphasised the importance of physical and mental wellness to reduce the occurrence of chronic conditions in society.  “One has to live a healthy lifestyle completely,” Dr Mbombo said.

Our society requires healing

Dr Keith Cloete, Head of the Department of Health in the Western Cape Province, said that COVID-19 had been “probably the biggest disruption” that most people would go through at a social level in their lifetime.   South African society “like never before” required healing and for people to be brought together and to start a journey of renewal, he said.  “All the avenues and all the skills that has been built up by the WoW! champions is exactly what we need in our society at this point is time,”  Dr Cloete said.  There was no better vehicle to be central to the recovery journey of communities.

Eating well means growing leafy vegetables

“Wow!  We enjoy our gardening,”  said Masbenza on recording at the ceremony.  Mhani Gingi realised the need to eat well and to plant leafy vegetables in order to achieve that, she said.  This was especially important for young children who had suffered most during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mhani Gingi had valued the partnership with the Ladles of Love organisation which provided food twice weekly for sharing with the Mhani Gingi soup kitchens, she said.  “More than that we realise that we need to do more gardens because people cannot just depend on food parcels,” she said.

Masebenza appealed to everyone – and not just wellness champions – to eat well, but also, to do food gardening.

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network has launched new food security and skills development initiatives at shelters for women in Cape Town to empower survivors of gender-based violence with entrepreneurial skills and the means to rebuild their lives.  The four new food garden projects announced during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children include a further development for five women at the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Athlone and a project with five beneficiaries at the Victory Outreach Christian Recovery Home in Hanover Park.

Mhani Gingi is a registered non-profit organisation committed to helping vulnerable groups in society make sustainable livelihoods for themselves, in order to combat chronic poverty and hunger.   This is achieved through community gardening projects and urban agriculture as well as through social enterprises.

The further vegetable garden established in November 2020 at the Saartjie Baartman Centre, where the Mhani Gingi Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence is situated, and the new collaborative partnership formed with VOCRH, will provide women who are survivors of domestic violence or recovering from substance abuse with gardening and food production skills.  The projects will also generate income for the beneficiaries and provide food for consumption that will supply the respective shelter kitchens.

Another two new community food gardens are currently being established under Mhani Gingi’s supervision, on an 8m X 4m site at Touching All Generations (TAG) centre in Manenberg and on a 10m X 8m plot at a LEAP Science and Maths School project in Langa.  These initiatives will empower another nine beneficiaries.

Mhani Gingi has been identified by the Department of Social Development in the Western Cape Province and the Department of Environmental Affairs to be an implementing agent of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) of the Department of Labour. This will provide stipends for the beneficiaries.

Lillian Masebenza, Founding Director of Mhani Gingi, said that the new projects are about “doing something, rather than just talking” about the pandemic of violence against women and children in the country and other challenges facing vulnerable groups in our communities.   Many women who sought protection at shelters had to go back to the same conditions and face the same violent perpetrators, Masebenza said. They needed to be equipped with skills, “not just empowered emotionally, but also economically,” in order to improve their situations and to escape from abusive circumstances, she said.

When faced with a dire situation or problem, Mhani Gingi’s approach was to ask “Well, what can we do about the situation?” Masebenza emphasised.

In his address to the nation on 17 June 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa referred to the increase in gender-based violence and femicide facing women and children as a second pandemic affecting the country.  The President read out the names of 21 women and children who were raped and murdered in the country in the two weeks prior to the speech.  According to Times Live, Social Policy Network data showed that the first three weeks of the lockdown saw more than 120 000 women contacting the government GBV and femicide command centre.   In Tshwane alone, the figure climbed by mid-April to between  500 and 1 000 calls per day to the centre.  Meanwhile, the Vodacom helpline experienced a 65% increase in calls from homebound women and children after lockdown began, the Times Live report said.

 ‘Food insecurity drives GBV in South Africa’

Bernadine Bachar, Director of the Saartjie Baartman Centre and head of the National Shelter Movement of South Africa, commented on the new garden project:  “We, at the Saartjie Baartman Centre, are very excited about this collaboration – food insecurity drives GBV in South Africa and community-based responses to both are crucial in assisting survivors and their children.”

The new gardening projects mark another phase in development of the Mhani Gingi Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence which relocated to the Saartjie Baartman Centre site in 2017.  The Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence showcases Mhani Gingi’s innovations to include people with disabilities in urban agriculture and houses the ‘Restoring Dignity’ Liquid Soap-Producing Enterprise project employing women survivors of domestic violence.

 VOCRH Vegetable Garden project

The five beneficiaries Mhani Gingi will work with in the skills development and sustainability project at VOCRH are women and youth who are recovering from substance abuse and related challenges.  The initiative will result in the establishment of the VOCRH Vegetable Garden by March 2021.

Masebenza referred to the VOCRH as “an amazing programme of restoring dignity and hope” to individuals in need.  “At Mhani Gingi we welcome collaborating with those who are more about doing than talking. This fits well with our plans of what we are doing during the 16 Days of Activism, not only against women and children abuse, but against ALL ills in our marginalised societies for our vulnerable groups.

‘Ploughing back into the community’

At TAG in Manenberg, soil is being tilled for the food garden that will boost supplies for a soup kitchen provided to surrounding residents and for the daily meal that is provided at TAG’s Early Childhood Development facility catering for about 50 children.  TAG’s prime focus is on youth development.  Since lockdown, attendance at the creche has reduced to about eight as parents cannot afford the R150 fees.

“The food garden will mean a snowball effect for us,” said owner Tania Francis, explaining that savings on food resulting from the food garden can be used to keep the ECD fees low.  “Food and vegetables are expensive, so whatever we can harvest from the garden we can plough back into the community,” she said.  “Food harvested from the garden will help to reduce costs so that fees of the ECD can be kept low, while excess food can be given to the children to take home to their families.”

TAG also now receives supplies of food for its soup kitchen from Mhani Gingi.  The supplies are donated by Ladles of Love. Francis said that TAG’s ultimate goal was to further benefit the children of Manenberg.  Another aim of the ECD, which was established six years ago, was to create employment by providing work for residents of the surrounding community, she said.  Four people have been employed to work in the new food garden.

National Shelter Movement of South Africa

In December 2020 the National Shelter Movement of South Africa launched the 24-hour shelter helpline – the first helpline dedicated to issues of domestic and intimate partner violence – in an effort to get more women away from their abusers and to the safety of shelters.  According to the website, Zubeda Dangor of the NSMSA said in a press statement:  “South Africa’s femicide rate is one of the highest in the world, and for many of these women, domestic violence was already part of the equation.”

She added, “With the Shelter Helpline, we hope to play an even more significant role in helping women escape abusive domestic situations.”

Mhani Gingi community gardens

This site at Kuyasa Soup Kitchen in Langa is being developed into a food garden by Leap Science and Maths School.

Mhani Gingi supervises several community food gardens in the greater Cape Town area, including two projects maintained by 25 people with physical disabilities at Uitsig Community Centre and Uitsig Primary School in Uitsig-Ravensmead.  Other food gardens are situated at Blouvlei School for Learners with Special Needs in Retreat, Langa Cheshire Home for Disabled Adults, Zimasa Primary School in Langa and at the South African Red Cross in Langa.

  • Mhani Gingi is also supported by the Department of Agriculture in the Western Cape Province, which provided technical assistance to Mhani Gingi, assistance with water harvesting for irrigating the food production gardens, as well as training in food processing.

MHANI GINGI SATELLITE COMMUNITY FOOD STATION OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED IN CAPE TOWN 

The Mhani Gingi Satellite Community Food Station officially opened with Ladles of Love founder, Danny Diliberto, present on Monday 31 August 2020 at the Mhani Gingi Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence at the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Athlone, Cape Town.

Soup made with vegetables picked from the Centre of Social Entrepreneurial Excellence gardens, and cooked in the refurbished Satellite Community Food Station kitchen donated by Ladles of Love, was served to guests and beneficiaries.  Ladles of Love generously provided new cookers and utensils for the Satellite Community Food Station and provides twice-weekly food supplies to supplement the preparation of soup at the four Community Soup Stations administered by Mhani Gingi.  The four soup stations are part of Mhani Gingi’s ongoing activities providing food security to vulnerable communities in the greater Cape Town area.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, the four Mhani Gingi community soup kitchens, situated in Athlone/Mannenberg, Uitsig in Ravensmead, Retreat at the Blouvlei School for Learners with Special Needs (LSN) and in Pelican Park, have provided meals to hundreds of residents in surrounding communities twice weekly.

With each of the four Mhani Gingi Soup Stations feeding about 200 individuals per meal, twice weekly, about 1 400 people are being fed per week.  Founding Director of Mhani Gingi, Lillian Masebenza, has estimated that about 52 000 meals have been served through the Mhani Gingi Satellite Community Food Station since March 2020.

Honouring women in the community

The launch event was also an opportunity for Masebenza to thank the women who cook the meals on behalf of Mhani Gingi and distribute them to vulnerable children and residents in the surrounding communities tirelessly, in compliance with the protocols of the COVID-19 lockdown.  Masebenza paid tribute to the women, who not only are cooking to feed hungry people but in doing so have unselfishly placed themselves and their families at risk during the lockdown, in order to help others.

In her address, which was recorded on video, Masbenza explained how Mhani Gingi works with women and people with disabilities in the community to help them improve their lives and to attain sustainable livelihoods.

“(For us) it means helping people to help themselves,” Masebenza said.  Through community gardening, Mhani Gingi provided people with training and skills to enable themselves to do something to help themselves and to generate sustainable livelihoods, she said.

The difficulty, Masebenza said, was generating sufficient funding to do more to meet the need.  “As you know, South Africa is the most unequal community or society in the world, according to the World Bank,” she said.  “Funding will help us to do more than we are doing now, plant more, and by that (help) to combat food insecurity more.”  While that was being achieved, people were improving their livelihood.

Masebenza repeated her Call to Action for increased support for community gardening as a sustainable means to combat food insecurity and hunger.  “People (on Mhani Gingi’s programmes) will be learning how to do gardening, (but also they) will be economically improving themselves, generating income and  all their community will be included,” Masebenza said, referring to the positive impact achieved on improving the livelihoods of the families of beneficiaries and the surrounding community as well.

She added that the Mhani Gingi methodology includes ongoing monitoring, assessment and reporting, to assess what people learned and the impact on the surrounding community, which was reported back to funders.

MHANI GINGI CELEBRATES OUTSTANDING WOMEN LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network is honouring National Women’s Day, 9 August 2020, by celebrating the outstanding leadership of the women working with the organisation to provide sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable groups.  Among them are five remarkable women who help to drive Mhani Gingi’s initiatives to combat food insecurity among marginalised communities during COVID-19.  This is being done through three soup stations Mhani Gingi is overseeing in Cape Town. The food is generously donated by Ladles of Love and others who also tirelessly look for food donations from other individuals and organisations.

Gladys Gobodo is helping to feed vulnerable children in the Athlone/Mannenberg area.  Vanessa Baadjies is team leader of 25 people with physical disabilities who are providing soup kitchens that feed hundreds of people every week in the impoverished Uitsig Community on the Cape Flats.  Cordelia Romes, Principal of Blouvlei School for Learners with Special Needs (LSN), is assisting Mhani Gingi’s soup station in the Retreat area and providing other support.  Tabisa Mahlathi, Mhani Gingi Project Co-ordinator, manages the Mhani Gingi Organic Herb and Vegetable Seedling Nursery which supports the three soup stations and Mhani Gingi’s various community food gardens established in Cape Town communities.

She is assisted by Nursery Assistant, Vuyisa Tekwana, who has been able to acquire a home and support her two children through employment at the Nursery since Mhani Gingi’s inception 15 years ago.

The three Mhani Gingi soup stations helping to meet the expanded need for food resulting from the COVID-19 lockdown are a continuation of the usual work of Mhani Gingi and these remarkable women, to alleviate poverty in vulnerable communities in Cape Town.  Mhani Gingi will feature their stories throughout Women’s Month 2020 in South Africa.  The holistic Mhani Gingi approach is well illustrated by the involvement of the women social entrepreneurs in the propagation of seedlings, right through to the delivery of nutritious, cooked meals directly to hungry people on the streets of our communities.

Using what they have

“These women are not waiting around for someone or something to come and help them to solve the problems in their communities,” said Lillian Masebenza, Founding Director of Mhani Gingi, who is an award-winning social entrepreneur and an Ashoka Fellow.   “These women take the initiative and ‘use what they have’ to help to solve problems and meet the challenges in their communities.  This has always been the approach that Mhani Gingi advocates.  Mhani Gingi doesn’t just talk; we walk the talk.”

Each soup station feeds about 200 people – and often more in Uitsig Community – twice a week, amounting to about 1 200 hungry people being fed per week by Mhani Gingi.  The name ‘Mhani Gingi’ is taken from the Shangaan words for an industrious woman.  “We also want to take this opportunity to thank Ladles of Love for the generous donations of the food, making it possible for Mhani Gingi to feed hundreds of vulnerable people every week,” added Masebenza.

Another donation from Ladles of Love, this time of cooking and kitchen equipment,  has boosted Mhani Gingi’s efforts at three Soup Stations which are feeding hungry people nutritious meals to provide food security in the greater Cape Town area in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network is a non-profit organisation which for the past 15 years has pursued a mission to alleviate poverty and hunger through providing sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities, mostly situated on the Cape Flats and in the Cape Town area.   The need among these beneficiaries of Mhani Gingi has been impacted by the lockdown necessitated by COVID-19 virus in the country.

Founding Director of Mhani Gingi, Lillian Masebenza, was overjoyed on Thursday 18 June 2020 when a delegation led by the founder of the Ladles of Love organisation, Danny Diliberto, delivered a generous donation of two cookers, two large cooking pots, soup ladles and other kitchen equipment and utensils to assist Mhani Gingi’s soup kitchens that are preparing and distributing food in Cape Town communities presently.

Since May 2020, Mhani Gingi has received welcome twice-weekly donations of vegetables, rice, maize and other supplies from the Ladles of Love initiative. These donations have boosted the efforts of Mhani Gingi’s three Soup Stations situated in Mannenberg/Athlone, Uitsig Community, and at Blouvlei LSN School for Learners with Special Needs in Retreat.  Each of the food stations feeds about 200 people, totalling about 600 vulnerable individuals being assisted by Mhani Gingi.  This amounts to about 1 200 people being fed per week.

Targeting vulnerable groups

The three Soup Stations represent the target groups of Mhani Gingi, which include vulnerable women and children, people with disabilities, and youth with special needs.

Mhani Gingi network member, Gladys Gobodo, feeds vulnerable children in the Mannenberg/Athlone area of the Cape Flats.  A group of 25 people with disabilities under team leader, Vanessa Baadjies, maintains community food gardens at Uitsig Primary School and at the Uitsig Community Centre, supervised by Mhani Gingi.  The group also provides a community soup kitchen which feeds elderly and hungry people in Uitsig, Ravensmead.

The support from Ladles of Love will help Mhani Gingi’s efforts to provide nutritious food and combat food insecurity among vulnerable communities.

“These are not just once-off soup kitchens but a continuation of our work with vulnerable groups in our communities,” said Lillian Masebenza, Founding Director of Mhani Gingi.  “I am so thankful for the donations from Ladles of Love which goes so well with the work we are doing on a daily basis.”

The supplies from Ladles of Love are distributed by the team from Mhani Gingi Organic Herb and Seedling Nursery, led by Project Co-ordinator, Tabisa Mahlathi, to the cooks preparing food at the three Soup Stations.

Ladles of Love supplies soup kitchens and shelters, supporting more than 100 beneficiaries and non-profit entities in Cape Town, according to the organisation’s website.  Ladles of Love has expanded its activities significantly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the website said. The Ladles of Love initiative started in 2014 when Diliberto was inspired to reach out to homeless people.
